Developers often have a very direct influence on technology choice. If you give them the tools and the build and then they're not successful, you burn a lot of trust very quickly. So it's a very long-term investment. You need to build up the trust and then continuously nurture that. And part of that is giving good recommendations and the right tools to people because that will make them successful.

It's important that we invest in the developer because the developer is the one building to our solutions. They are the ones who are using our products. They are the ones who are building new products with our solutions.

Developers have this big influence, especially in this new world of everything is API driven and you just want to onboard and get stuff going and build. So I think there is a lot of mindshare in that relationship. How do you have the empathy? How do you go out there? How do you provide the right resources? This is a very long-term strategy and goal because winning trust and also gaining success with developers doesn't happen overnight.

I think we have a lot to learn from the way that Elastic has built their company around the technical audience, has built developer communities, built developer tools, has focused on frictionless experiences and tooling for the developer. Elastic has a very well-known product in the Elastic Search offering. And that's been incorporated into hundreds of applications.

There is a similar collaboration or like two-sided approach that Elastic has this more than a decade of experience with developers and pushing that forward.

And Elastic has a very, very strong brand reputation with the developer community.

And JPMC is bringing this breath of fresh air to banking and API development.

Coming together to speak to the developer community, it can be very powerful. What really excites me the most is being a part of the innovation that's happening around us and being an accelerator to that innovation.

Moving forward with successful developer tools is the shared mission of both Elastic and JPMC. I think that's the ultimate goal that everybody wants is, if you try to make the developers that work with you successful, you will be successful as well.

Bridging the gap between developers and the business

Peter Bailey, Head of Product at J.P. Morgan Payments, and Philipp Krenn, Head of Developer Relations at Elastic, sat down to discuss the importance of developers and of fostering good developer relations.

With more than a decade in the industry, Elastic has built a foundation of creating developer-first experiences. They recognize that supporting developers is a long-term investment. Giving good recommendations and ensuring access to the right tools can help deliver success.

J.P. Morgan Payments is working with Elastic to put greater emphasis on developers—bringing a breath of fresh air to API development in the financial services industry. Like Elastic, we understand that clients can benefit from the unique expertise developers bring to the table, as they are the ones who are building the products and solutions that help drive innovation and business growth.

Identifying the needs of developers

The collaborative decision network at companies across industries is changing, with developers and technologists earning a bigger share of the voice in helping to shape business decision-making.

Developers have a wide choice in the technologies and solutions used, and that choice is critical in helping them build new products and solutions in virtually every industry. Leading with effective developer tools is a common goal amongst an ever-growing number of companies—a trend that emphasizes the importance of collaboration with empathy between developer teams and the business in order to provide the right resources to developers at the right time in the product journey.

Developers are tasked with solving complex problems and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The stakes are high, but their technical expertise and ability to think differently allows them to create cutting-edge payment systems and seamless user experiences that others might not have considered.1 With this in mind, how can we provide the necessary support?
